Who Is Protecting the People Inside SCDC?

A prison sentence should never become a death sentence. Yet when correctional institutions are severely understaffed, the consequences can place the lives of incarcerated people, staff, and ultimately the public at risk.

Too few correctional officers, nurses, and mental-health professionals can mean unchecked violence, delayed medical treatment, unanswered cries for help, and preventable deaths. Adequate staffing is not simply an employment issue; it is a matter of human rights, public safety, and accountability.

Incarcerated people remain human beings. They are fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and members of our communities. Regardless of why someone is serving time, the responsibility to provide reasonable safety and necessary care does not disappear at the prison gate.

The Street Justice Foundation is calling attention to a critical question: Who is protecting the people inside SCDC? Meaningful prison reform must include adequate staffing, access to medical and mental health care, safer living conditions, and accountability when the system fails.

Prison reform can’t wait. Protect human life. Demand accountability.
